    Changeling

Gods. What on Earth, what in the solar system, what in the bloody universe itself, were they thinking when they named this movie "Changeling".

    Seriously.

The title of this movie bears such minimal relevance to the topic, that it astounds me.

Okay, now that said, I have no other criticism about this movie. What a movie it is. The acting is top notch, the story is supposedly a true one, and is very well told in my opinion. There's emotion where there should be emotion. The characters are ALL - yes, emphasis on "all" there - entirely convincing. I could feel things from their points of view. I could feel for those whom you should be able to feel for.

I didn't know what to expect from this movie. I didn't look it up in the IMDB. I don't know why I chose to watch it. But I am most certainly glad that I did. two thumbs, 5 stars, whatever top rating you wish to use, this movie is deserving of it. I'd move it to the top of your "to watch" list, without hesitation.

    Mirrors

What can I say about this movie.

Well, I only watched it because Kiefer Sutherland was the star, and he's a pretty decent actor. So, I figured, why not give it a try.

    Happily, it did not dissapoint.

First: the Bad. Thinking. Thinking. Okay...here's one - the movie is a typical cliche story of demonic possession. Well, the overall premise is, at least. I suppose it uses a few tropes, like demons vs. mirrors, and mirrors as an alternate reality (pretty sure there's a trope for that).

Okay - that's really about it for the bad. Oh! Oh! Over the top acting, in a few places. I forgot about that, because the movie was overall so damn enjoyable.

So, the good. First, I'm gonna start with the end. The ending was absolutely brilliant. I mean the very very end, though, not the climactic-ending. Sort of like in Men In Black, the very end, when K opens the door, and it turns out the whole world is in a locker of some alien world. 'Course, I'm just using that to compare. I'm hardly gonna go and give the ending away.

What else. Let's see - it was a nice take on a possession story. Very non-religious. no priest came in to save the day. No holy water got rid of the evil. No praying happened...well...at all, actually. Very nice to see. The ambiance was perfect. Creepy, without being absurd. Real, without lacking in imagination. The "shock" scenes, were not lame teen-slasher style "shock" scenes, which I must say made me really happy.

This was a movie that set out to creep you out, not outright scare you. It set out to make you think "what if", and did so superbly. It avoided the "boo from behind" trope, thank goodness. There of course were a very few scenes which came *very* close to being that typical teen-slasher flic type of "shock" scene, but they added flavour, depth, and a general feeling of creepiness, as opposed to being literally all the "fright" you might find in the film.

So, I can of course do nothing short of recommend this with two thumbs up, 5 stars, whatever fancy rating system you want to use. A great film to watch alone, or with a few friends, with the lights down low on a stormy evening. Not a party film though. Basically, the best thing I can say about this movie, is that it's worth buying. I can't say it's a "watch 5 times a year" good film, but it does have replayability, because as I said, the creepiness of the film is not in a few lame shock scenes. Which is to say, that you won't lose all "scare" value simply because after seeing it once, you know when the dark guy in the mask is about to jump out and go "rawr".

I'm very pleased that I chose to watch this. I'm very glad that Mr. Sutherland did not dissapoint.

  • If it seems to good to be true....

Well, as the saying goes, "it usually is."

Nice expensive watch. Nice low purchase price. And now I'm fighting with the auction site customer service over the shipping cost. Despite it being rather clearly listed on their site, that the shipping should cost $10.00, they are trying to charge me $30.00. That's an additional 1/3rd the cost of the watch in the first place. Yes, even with shipping at that high cost, it's still a great price for a nearly $1000 watch...but I'm not made of money, and I made the purchase based on what I could and would reasonably afford to spend, including the expected (as listed) $10.00 shipping fee.

So my response to them today, after asking if perhaps it was a mistake, is that i simply will not pay $30.00 for shipping. So the onus is on them now - either they can follow their own posted shipping rates and charge me what they are supposed to, or they can shove the purchase up their collective asses, as I don't need the watch *that* badly.

We'll see what their response is.

Edit: They pointed out a nice bit of smallprint at the bottom of the watch details screen, that says "Oh, by the way, this item is considered a higher cost shipping item". Apparently because it comes in a stupid jewellery case, which naturally they can't just take it the hell out of. Either way, it does put the onus back on me, and I do want the watch, so I paid for it. Now I know for next time, on the off chance I happen to want to buy another watch from them for some reason (like maybe to resell for profit). The one single bright side to the higher shipping cost, is that it also is faster than the cheaper shipping cost. I ought to have the watch within a couple weeks, instead of up to 2 months.

    New Watch. Nice!

After my Bulova watch battery died yesterday, leaving me feeling naked until I'm able to go buy a new one (battery, that is), I decided that it might be time to get a new watch altogether. The Bulova was a nice purchase...a decade ago. But it is rather garish, being completely gold in colour. And the gold plating has rubbed off in many places, leaving it rather tawdry looking.

I am kind of picky about watches. I don't like cheap junk, for one. I also wanted to try and find something a bit more tasteful this time around. And I did, at least, I think so.

An "Akribos XXIV" - though, just a generic pic, not a real pic of mine, since it'll be an unknown number of weeks before I actually get it (especially given how bad the mail is here).

    akribos xxiv

That beauty retails for about $950.00

    I paid about $110.00

I love auctions. I really really do. I also kinda wish I had the capital to try and make some money off buying and reselling auctioned merchandise. But I don't. Oh well.

(**note: I bought a brand new one, not a used one. Pretty much everything from the auction site is remaindered and close-out merchandise)

Off note - got acupuncture today at physio. It was not like I'd expected. I couldn't feel the needles going in at all, and though I felt a very little bit of muscle reaction from the first 2 stabs, the third gave a very strange "electrical" feeling deep in the muscle. Not painful, not even a bit. Rather, like a decently strong electric charge was suffusing the muscle deep down, which felt somewhat good. I wish Tens machines felt like that - they'd be worth using if they penetrated that deep in the muscle, instead of just being a surface electrical "zap" most of the time.

    Oh, the pain.

After the first hour of my "OR1" (Occupational Rehabilitation) program today, I though all my limbs would fall off, and that I might fall asleep standing up (assuming I *could* stay standing).

After 4 hours of it..well, I no longer "thought" it might happen - I was utterly certain.

And I get the immense pleasure of doing this 5 days a week, 4 hours of steadily increasing levels of torture per day.

It's good they understood when I told them there was no damned way I'd be able to handle that, followed by 4 hours of "work". It's even better then, that they not only agreed, but also have power over even WCB in this case, to decide what is good or not good, when it comes to work hours and duties.

Thus, I'm off work, again, at least for this week. Possibly/probably for next week as well. Assuming I survive this program for that long, then I'm likely to have to start light duties again the following week, on top of the program still, of course.

I forsee Tylenol 3's becoming my best friends. Those, or the bottle of Absinthe I splurged on today. Maybe both. We'll see.

So, I was browsing in London Drugs a few days back, and saw a nice quality Blue Ray DVD player, the Sony BDP-S350. I decided today that I should really upgrade sooner rather than later, and stop wasting my money on normal DVD's, when I know full well I'm just going to want to upgrade later to HD.

So I bought it. Retail was $299.00, I got the guy to give it to me for $199.00. Haven't hooked it up yet, though I did buy a couple Blue Ray DVD's to go with it. Of course, I only have a 480p LCD TV, so I'm not going to really benefit from the astounding quality of 1080p resolution. A TV upgrade is likely to cost at least $700.00 - $900.00, so it is going to have to wait. Though it certainly is on my list.

The movies: Alien vs Predator 2: Requiem and Enchanted, neither of which I own, and neither of which I've seen. Was going to grab Batman: The Dark Knight, but they didn't have it in stock. Maybe I'll pick it up Sunday after work.

On an off note, 1 - watch this video, and 2 - what the bloody hell is with Amazon.ca? It blows. It doesn't have half of the things I've tried to look up on it, whereas Amazon.com always seems to. Furthermore, Amazon.com sells mp3 singles, and Amazon.ca apparently does not. I can't even make a legit music mp3 purchase without going iTunes, which is never going to happen (Amazon.com asks for your address to sell mp3's, and won't sell them to non-American addresses). Highly unimpressive.

  • Woooo!!!! This Harry Potter Trailer has me absolutely dying with anticipation. The book was bloody awesome, and the movies have gotten better with each one.

From the look of that trailer, "The Half Blood Prince" will not break the trend.

Now where's that damned time machine, so I don't have to wait!

  • So.Much.Snow.

It's just not right. I mean, it was bad enough the other day when they said 2cm, and we got at least double that. But this...this is patently absurd. It's like being back in Edmonton.

    So. Much. Snow.

    so much snow

Look at this! It's everywhere! Mountains of the evil white crap!

    Ghost Town

So, finally a movie "review". Or whatever you call it when it's a personal opinion piece such as this.

The movie is Ghost Town, a romantic comedy. Other than maybe Téa Leoni, it doesn't really star anyone who sticks out, though Ricky Gervais, fulfilling the primary role of Dr. Bertram Pincus, has writing credits for quite a number of television programs. I think perhaps, in this case, it's a good thing that nobody "major" stars. It allowed for the roles to be played for what they were supposed to be, rather than the roles being played out per an actors' preestablished M.O.

Many comments called this movie unoriginal, uninspiring, and just plain nothing special. I can't dispute the first - it stole it's primary concepts from other films and novels, there's no question about that. But then, what, nowadays, actually is an entirely original concept, hmm? In an age when virtually everything has been done, it's not the basic concepts that matter - it's the storytelling. And I think this movie did just fine in that regard.

As for uninspiring, I think people have it quite wrong. I'm not a huge fan of comedy in general, though I don't mind a  good romantic comedy such as this, but I really liked this movie. The comedy is kept much more...subtle...than many films we've seen over the  past few years, which is much to my liking. The base concept of being able to see ghosts (not really a spoiler) is far fetched of course, but the reason for their existence is most definitely inspiring, as is the overall moral of the story as it applies to the primary role. It's a serious film, with an underlaying story that keeps it lighthearted and palatable. And the humor as I said is more subtle, more natural and nonchalant in it's delivery, than say for instance, anything ever done by Jim Carrey (thank god).

    So, the good:

    • Excellent humour.
    • Subtle delivery.
    • Strong storytelling.
    • Strong moral base.
    • High overall enjoyability.

    And the bad:

    • A bit corny at times, which takes away from the subtle delivery previously mentioned.
    • A few repeating characters don't get their story "finalized", so why show them multiple times?
    • There's a few badly written bits of conversation. Unnecessary, and mostly unintelligible.

Overall, I'd call this a "definitely worth watching" movie, despite not being a fan of comedy. Possibly a good one for group movie night, or for a date, though really, there shouldn't need to be anyone else around to enjoy a well told story.

    Enjoy!

    Oh So Cold

Okay, so having lived in Edmonton for 15 years, this is really nothing in comparison. But I didn't move here for more of the same-old, same-old. I moved to Vancouver for *nice* weather.

So, here's the two centimeters of snow the radio predicted.

    2 cm - Right

I think maybe they confused metric with imperial. Or perhaps I'm just being overly generous?

Then there is the view of the wonderful weather down my street.

This is wrong - very wrong

Doesn't it just make you want to break out in song, and dance the night away?

And last but not least, evidence that the government aliens simply *must* be controlling our weather:

Blue Sky Above Me - but Snow everywhere

The picture doesn't show it entirely well, but it's snowing like crazy, while the sky above me was quite clear and blue. Because that's perfectly normal.

p.s. - Watch the Jakarta - One Desire music video on YouTube. It's quite amusing.
